Lititz, St Elizabeth residents block road in protest of continued power outage
Residents of Lititz in St Elizabeth staged a protest Friday morning over the non-restoration of electricity to the community more than two weeks after the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
The protesters blocked the main road in front of Lititz All Age, with several of them complaining that unscrupulous contractors are charging residents and businesses to restore electricity.
“The contractors dem dig the pole Wednesday and say dem ah give we back light and den dem go Farm and is now Friday and we don’t get back light. The JPS contractor dem a charge residents $30,000 and businesses $70,000 fi get back light and it unfair. We want back the light,” one resident said.
Police eventually arrived and attempted to clear the makeshift barriers of fallen trees and debris at about 11 am.
However, the residents are sticking to their guns.
“We ah go continue to block the road till we get back light!” the resident said.
