Lando Genius banks on Money Up rhythm
In 2002 when producer Steven “Lenky” Marsden unleashed the inescapable
Diwali rhythm, which spawned two international hits and several local chart-toppers, Lando Genius was one of those impressed with the authenticity of the project.
Now 22 years later, Lando Genius has released his first ‘juggling’, which is called
Money Up rhythm. The project was released digitally on July 5.
“The inspiration for the Money Up rhythm came from just observing independent ladies working for what they wanted and not selling their bodies for things. This started out as a single called Money Up by Shawn Storm, and we decided to turn it into a ‘juggling’ and voice other artistes,” Lando Genius told the Jamaica Observer’s Splash.
The rhythm also features More Gyal by Esco, Different by Sanjay, and Maggle by 21 Law.
“The project took about three to four months to complete from voicing the artistes to the mixing of the song. Juggling rhythms came back in a big way last year and projects like these can help to break an emerging artiste,” said Lando Genius.
He added: “It gives them a highlight among other big acts who are featured on the rhythm, so there’s an opportunity for them to be exposed to the industry. You can never tell who heard their talent and wanted to do musical business with them or help promote their music on bigger platforms.”
Lando Genius says the feedback to Money Up rhythm has been positive.
“The reception has been great. I’ve been getting a lot of support in France from dancers who post videos online dancing to the songs. The song is also being played on local and international radio stations, and people have been reaching out to me telling me they love the dancehall/Afrobeat fusion of the rhythm,” Lando Genius explained.
The Portmore-based producer said it wasn’t difficult getting the artistes to participate in the project.
“Well, artistes are the most difficult thing to deal with at times. The ones I have a bond with most of the time it’s just their time scheduling which makes it difficult. Sometimes they are off island or just busy doing personal stuff. But regardless, it will get done in a timely manner,” he said.
