Karting doubles up this weekend
Karting fans with have twice the excitement this weekend as the Jamaica Karting Association (JKA) will hold its fifth meet on Saturday, July 20, and the sixth, on Sunday, July 21 at Palisadoes International Raceway, Kingston.
“We had a double scheduled in case we were able to have an international race meet. As the children are off school, we took the opportunity to get more racing in for summer. It will also be more economical as the competitors will use one set of tyres for the two days and the entry fee for the second day will be discounted,” Neil Williams, president, JKA, told the Jamaica Observer’s weekly Auto magazine.
Dubbed the Scorching Hot Summer of Speed, local teams are prepared to handle the two consecutive days of racing and, while not a fully fledged international event, there will be overseas competitors in attendance.
“We are expecting over 40 entrants, including drivers from Trinidad & Tobago and current sport car racers. Everyone is looking forward to more racing and more excitement,” said Williams.
The previous meet was a hotbed of action itself. Lucas Lee led the Comer 50 pack with 42.5 points. Noah Thwaites was the top driver in Rotax Micromax. The 2023 Abe Ziadie Trophy holder, Brandon Shor continued his grasp on Rotax Minimax taking 41.5 points ahead of David Brown’s 32.5 points. In the higher classes, racing action was much closer than the points spreads would indicate. Alex Shamma was the top points scorer in Rotax Junior on 34 points. Edward Upstone fought hard with Zander Williams all day to head home with 38 points to his rival’s 24. Duncan Stanley was top of the leaderboard in Super Rotax claiming 35.5 points for his efforts.
