Boyz fall six places in FIFA world rankings
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Jamaica is still the highest-ranked Caribbean Football Union (CFU) team in the FIFA world rankings, but slipped six places after bad performances in the Copa America tournament in the United States last month.
The Jamaicans are now ranked 59th in the latest edition of world rankings released on Thursday by FIFA, the sport’s world governing body, which keeps them the sixth-highest ranked team in the Concacaf region, and one of four CFU teams inside the world’s top 100.
FIFA says three continental tournaments, including the Copa, the South American championship, in the United States in which Jamaica were a full participant, and a plethora of international friendlies were served up in June and July.
“With no fewer than 125 matches having been contested across the globe, generating plenty of movement in the latest edition of the men’s world ranking,” the news release said.
The Reggae Boyz lost 1-0, 3-1, and 3-0 to Mexico, Ecuador, and Venezuela respectively, in Copa America, with Head Coach Heimir Hallgrimsson resigning to take up an offer with Republic of Ireland after the last game.
