Major crimes continue to trend downwards — JCF
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica has seen a substantial decline in major crimes during the second quarter of 2024.
During his recent Quarterly Press Conference, Police Commissioner Dr Kevin Blake, announced a nearly 12 per cent overall decrease in major crimes since the start of the year compared to the same period in 2023.
Dr Blake highlighted the reduction across several key categories. He said, “notably, murders have decreased by 14.5 per cent as at July 15, 2024. Shootings are down almost two per cent, robberies have decreased by 15 per cent, rape has seen a significant drop of 32 per cent, and break-ins are down by six per cent.”
The commissioner also underscored the increased success in seizing illegal firearms, which are often linked to violent crimes.
“As at June 30, 2024, we recorded a 14 per cent increase in gun seizures over the same period last year, taking 422 illegal firearms off the streets and out of our communities, mainly pistols,” Dr Blake said.
This decline in major crimes and the increased recovery of illegal firearms reflect the ongoing efforts of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to enhance public safety and reduce violence across the nation.
The JCF said it continues to implement strategic measures and intelligence-led operations to combat crime effectively.
Dr Blake reiterated the force’s commitment to maintaining this downward trend and called on the public to support the police in their efforts to make Jamaica a safer place.
