Independence Day event to benefit victims of Beryl
Cherry Marshall, co-conceptualiser of the ‘62nd Jamaica Independence Madness’ event, says all proceeds will be donated to Cecelin Gayle Foundation to assist those in need following the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
It is slated for August 6 at Edgewater District in Manchester.
“We just started the foundation in my mom’s name and, to be honest with you, we’ve been doing so much. My relatives are doing what they can do in America, while I’m here in Jamaica. What better day to have the event than Independence Day, and we’re putting in place a lot of things to make it exciting,” she told the Jamaica Observer.
The day’s festivities will feature music by Dan Fresh and Size Mik Mobile.
There will also be a motorcade with a float, as well as grab bag and a money grab machine.
The initiative is also being supported by YG/Vybez/Jah Vybez Entertainment Centre.
Marshall noted that the foundation has already been lending a hand in St Elizabeth. However, there is a far way to go.
“We went up into the mountains where the Maroons are, and we bought them a refrigerator and a lot of solar lights, groceries, diapers, and so on. We’re giving back to the hurricane victims, but there’s a lot more to do,” she said.
Marshall is also the co-owner of Dutch Pot Jamaican Restaurant chain in Florida. She works closely with Melony Gregory, who is her sister and business partner.
“I’m encouraging everyone to support the event because it’s for a worthy cause. Earlier this year we helped the Patrick Town Primary School in Manchester, and now we’ll have to revamp the fence because of damage from the hurricane. We’re putting on this event for the people to come and support and have a good time,” she said.
