Trinidad police investigate death of seaman who arrived on vessel from Suriname
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Police are investigating the death of a 37-year-old seaman, who was found dead on board a vessel that docked in Port of Spain on Sunday after sailing from Suriname.
Police said that they had received a call from the agents for the container vessel, BBC indicating that the captain reported that Lakunin Oleksandr, a cook on the ship, had been found unresponsive after being seen intoxicated during their departure from Suriname on Saturday night.
The police said that on boarding the vessel they found Oleksandr’s quarters ransacked, with the deceased lying nude on a bed, bearing marks of violence on his right arm and face.
They said investigations are continuing.
Police are also investigating the stabbing death of a Venezuelan on Sunday night in Freeport in west central Trinidad.
Police have identified him as Fayge Augusta and reported that he was killed during an altercation with a relative.
Augusta was taken to the Couva Hospital in central Trinidad, where he succumbed to his injuries early Monday morning.
No arrests have been made.
