Wins for Christania Williams and Jodean Williams in Europe
Christania Williams ran a season’s best 11.24 seconds (-1.6m/s) to win the women’s 100m at Sunday’s 35th staging of the Meeting Sport e Soliarieta Lignano in Italy, a World Athletics Continental Tour – Bronze meet.
The 2016 Rio 100m finalist and 4x100m relay silver medallist, who had run 11.39 seconds (-1.4m/s) to win her first round heat, crossed the line ahead of runner-up Celera Barnes of the US and compatriot Serena Cole who also ran a season’s best 11.26 seconds for third place. Krystal Sloley was fourth in 11.27 seconds.
Stephenie-Ann McPherson was second in the women’s 400m in 51.51 seconds and Shanna Kaye Anderson fifth in 52.79 seconds as Shafiqua Maloney lowered her St Vincent national record to win in 50.63 seconds.
National junior champion Gary Card was fourth in the 100m, running 10.39 seconds (-1.5m/s), while Michael Campbell was sixth in 10.42 seconds as American Kendal Williams won with 10.21 seconds. In the heats, Campbell ran 10.37 (-1.1m/s) and Card 10.45 (-1.4m/s).
On Saturday, Jodean Williams won the women’s sprint double at the Moore-Guldensporen meeting held in Kortrijk, Belgium – a World Athletics Continental Tour-Bronze meet. Williams won the 100m in 11.17 seconds (0.5m/s) and then lowered her 200m personal best to 22.69 seconds (1.0m/s), faster than the 22.75 seconds she ran at the recent JAAA National Trials.
Crystal Morrison was also a winner, taking the 100m hurdles in 13.21 seconds (0.1m/s) after running 13.35 seconds (0.3m/s) in the first round.
Also on Saturday at the 46th Grand Prix Nove Mestro nad Metuji in the Czech Republic, a World Athletics Continental Tour-Bronze event, there were wins for Demar Murray and Shawn-D Thompson.
Murray won the men’s 400m in 50.04 seconds while Thompson jumped 7.97m (-0.2m/s) to win the men’s long jump.
Former national champion Oshane Bailey finished fifth in the men’s 100m, running 10.50 seconds (-0.6m/s) after he had run 10.45 seconds (0.3m/s) to win his first round heat.
