TMC to seek funds to repair damaged Falmouth Transportation Centre
TRELAWNY, Jamaica – The Trelawny Municipal Corporation (TMC) is now faced with the task of replacing the bus shed at the Falmouth Transportation Centre which was destroyed during the recent passage of Hurricane Beryl.
The damage to the lone bus shed came as the municipal corporation was working to provide covering for the 11 loading bays.
Speaking at the monthly general meeting on Thursday, mayor of Falmouth and chairman of the TMC C Junior Gager who revealed that the municipal corporation is facing a $30million bill to repair its damaged properties, said funding will have to be found to replace the bus shed.
“It is among the priorities because once you have that properly covered it will take care of a lot. Because when it rains now the passengers are faced with getting wet and we don’t want that. We will have to fix it,” he said.
Last year Transport Minister Daryl Vaz, who visited the facility at the invitation of Gager, described as unacceptable the absence of shelters for the 11 loading bays for taxis and buses serving the 22 routes and the limited seating at the facility.
He recommended that private entities fund the improvement of municipal corporation-run transportation hubs across the country in exchange for advertising at these facilities.
Gager is also inviting private entities to assist with funding for covering at the transportation centre in exchange for advertising space.
Apart from the transportation centre, he noted that the infirmary, Poor Relief building and a section of the market were damaged during the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
