Six Olympic-bound Jamaicans set for Ed Murphey Classic
Six members of the Jamaican team to the Paris Olympic Games are among 20 Jamaican athletes who will take part in the Ed Murphey Track Classic in Memphis, Tennessee, on Thursday.
Triple jumper Jaydon Hibbert, national 100m hurdles record holder Ackera Nugent, two-time World Athletics Championships 100m hurdles winner Danielle Williams, and national men’s 200m champion Bryan Levell are all down to compete in the meet, which is part of the American Track League series.
Hibbert, who only competed in the boys 19 and under long jump at the recent Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) Championships at the National Stadium, will contest the triple jump for the first time since the Racers Grand Prix, over a month ago, at which he achieved his season’s best 17.75m.
O’Brien Wasome is also down to compete, and they will go up against Americans Omar Craddock and Christian Taylor as well as Bermuda’s Jah-Nhai Perinchief, who is also headed to Paris.
Chanice Porter, who will be making her second trip to the Olympics, will contest the women’s long jump, taking on Chantel Malone of the British Virgin Islands, Tyra Gittens and Jasmine Todd of the USA, and Ruth Usoro of Nigeria.
Nugent, who held the world lead in the 100m hurdles for a few hours after she set the national record of 12.28 seconds on the final day of the JAAA’s Championships, will contest the women’s 100m.
She is one of four Jamaicans who will be seeking a place in the finals along with Briana Williams, Jonielle Smith, and Shockoria Wallace as they line up against top competitors such as Favour Ofili of Nigeria and Americans Brittany Brown, Javianne Oliver, and Candace Hill.
Levell, who was fourth in the men’s 100m at the championships, leads three other Jamaicans in the event – Yohan Blake, Kadrian Goldson, and Nigel Ellis – and they will match up against PJ Austin of the USA, Joseph Amoah of Ghana, Aaron Brown of Canada, and Emmanuel Matadi of Liberia.
Danielle Williams, who will be making her first appearance at the Olympic Games, is down to contest the 100m hurdles and faces a competitive line-up that also includes Alia Armstrong and Christina Clemons of the USA, Denisha Cartwright of The Bahamas, and Miriam Abdul-Rashid of Canada.
Orlando Bennett, who is also headed for his first Olympic Games, is one of four Jamaicans in the 110m hurdles, including Damion Thomas, LaFranz Campbell, and Odario Phillips.
National record holder Navasky Anderson will contest the Mike Cody Men’s 800m Invitational at which he will face Festus Lagat of Kenya and American Eric Holt, while national champion Tarees Rhoden will compete in another men’s 800m race.
World Championship finalist and relay medallist Candice McLeod will compete in the Jim Mathis women’s 400m at which she will compete against the likes of Courtney Okolo and Quantera Hayes of the USA, Paola Moran of Mexico, and Gabby Scott of Puerto Rico.
Christoff Bryan is down to compete in the men’s high jump and is expected to face off with Jamal Wilson of The Bahamas and Vernon Turner of the USA.
