NWA urges caution at signalised intersections amid post-hurricane traffic light outages
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Works Agency (NWA) is urging motorists to exercise extreme caution while using signalised intersections where the traffic lights are out of service.
Several traffic signals across the island are out of commission following the passage of Hurricane Beryl last week.
Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, said that technical teams have been out doing a comprehensive assessment of traffic signals to identify the issues.
He noted that preliminary checks have so far revealed that some of the electronic components of the traffic systems were affected by heavy winds and rains associated with the hurricane. Some signals are also out of commission as a result of issues related to the electrical power supply, Shaw said.
In the meantime, as the agency continues to make repairs, Shaw is reminding motorists that no one has the right of way when the traffic signals are out of service and that the intersections should be used similarly to a non-signalised intersection.
As a result, all motorists should exercise due care when using these junctions/intersections, the NWA said.
