JPS says light restored to 83 per cent of customers islandwide
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) has announced that 83 per cent of its customers have now been reconnected to its grid.
The light and power company made the revelation via its X account on Monday afternoon after almost a week of what they described as “heavy lifting.”
“Talk about heavy lifting…because of the dedication and determination of our hard-working teams, 83% of our valued customers now have electricity. Early mornings, late nights and the passion our teams have brought us a far way in five days,” the post read.
“We’re on it Jamaica,” they continued.
Earlier today, Opposition Spokesman on Energy, Phillip Paulwell, accused JPS of focusing on the “easy tasks” in the power restoration effort while it is yet to begin the “heavy lifting”.
Many Jamaicans, especially those along the southern coast, have been without electricity since the passage of Hurricane Beryl last Wednesday.
“It is clear that the JPSCo is focusing on the easy tasks and has yet to commence the heavy lifting part of the restoration effort. It is apparent that they lack the necessary personnel and resources to efficiently restore electricity to our communities. This prolonged delay is not only inconvenient but also detrimental to the economic well-being of our nation,” Paulwell said.
