Postcard from Paris: Suzanne McFayden
Author, leading art collector and humanitarian Suzanne McFayden shares with SO her routine when in Paris, one of her favourite cities.
On my first day, I usually take a walk or run along the Seine. Being among Parisians doing the same thing sets the tone for my stay in the city. A second favourite would be the same in Tuileries Gardens by the Louvre.
On my first night I like to eat at the Michelin-starred L’Orangerie in the lobby of the Georges Cinq hotel aka the Four Seasons. It is definitely my biggest meal splurge while I am there but I love it. Reservations are needed.
I always spend a day walking around St Germain-des-Prés. I’d start early with a café and croissant at Café de Flore on the Boulevard itself. After that and if it’s Wednesday there’s a farmers’ market where you can buy bread and cheese or sandwiches or just walk around and be a “flaneur”.
Chocolates from Maison du Chocolat are a sweet treat to end the sandwich. Same with macarons from Pierre Hermé and you can find an outpost of both stores in St Germain.
If it is a very hot day I would continue walking to get a sorbet from Berthillon on Ile Sainte Louis.
Another favourite spot (for a glass of Champagne or a meal) is Langosteria at the top of the Cheval Blanc hotel. Get there early enough to watch the sun going down over the Seine. Reservations definitely needed.
As a book lover I always try to get to Shakespeare and Company bookstore as I love independent bookstores and this one has more books than it seems possible to fit into a space.
Another fun thing for an Insta moment is the iconic green chairs at the Luxembourg Gardens.
Skip the Mona Lisa at the Louvre and, instead, take in the Winged Victory of Samothrace monument at the top of the stairs inside the Louvre. I love the Pinnault Collection in the former Bourse de Commerce.
Most of all, Paris to me is a walking city and that is what I love to do there most of all. It also helps burn off all the calories I consume from my eating.
