Long recovery awaits
Dear Editor,
As with other Caribbean islands, Jamaica did not escape the wrath of Hurricane Beryl, particularly southern parishes, on Wednesday.
Based on preliminary reports and video footage, sections of St Elizabeth, Manchester, and Clarendon have been devastatingly damaged. Lots of crops, businesses, and houses were severely impacted. It is going to be a long recovery for some of these citizens.
Noticeable damage has also been recorded in other parishes, including Portland and St Thomas, and people have started to pick up the pieces, but some do not even know where to start, because all that they have worked for in life was battered by the monstrous hurricane.
Coupled with damage to property, some families will have to deal with grief, as there have been reports of at least two deaths.
Nevertheless, we are grateful that, in the overall scheme of things, our lives have been spared. We can still attest to the goodness of God.
The recovery will necessitate our collective efforts. We have to give a helping hand to our neighbours — nail a zinc, supply some food, provide some clothes, or check in from time to time.
We have to spare a thought for those who have lost their livelihoods during the hurricane. Many farmers have lost their agriculture produce. Moving forward will certainly be different and challenging for them. Several businesses sustained damage as well. Undoubtedly, the country’s economic activity will be affected and cost of living is likely to increase over the next few months.
It is forecast to be a very active hurricane season. With Beryl giving us a frightening start, we certainly hope we will not have to experience another serious weather system.
Beryl was the first major hurricane that many young adults had to face by themselves, and it caused them a lot of anxiety and stress.
The Government will certainly have to fork out a hefty budget to get the country and people back on track.
We must stay prepared as we navigate the rest of the hurricane season.
