Bermuda’s Troy Anthony adds flavour to UK Bubblers Riddim
Often mistaken for a Caribbean country, Bermuda shares similarities with that region including warm climate and island culture. Singer Troy Anthony identified with the West Indies through his biggest musical heroes who are from Jamaica.
One of his country’s seasoned reggae artistes, Anthony’s latest song is Start Anew, one of 12 tracks on the UK Bubblers Riddim, a compilation album distributed by British company, ZigeDub.
“Even though Bermuda is not in the Caribbean Sea we are very much a Caribbean-flavoured country when it comes to the music. From early years, I listened to artistes like Sanchez, Trevor Sparks, Dennis Brown, Bob Marley and Luciano, just to name a few,” he told Observer Online.
The UK Bubblers Riddim is actually an updated take on the Queen Majesty, first done at Treasure Isle during the rocksteady era of the late 1960s. It has been revived numerous times by Jamaican producers with great success.
With his father being a professional musician, Troy Anthony grew up around music. He has worked with several Jamaican producers including Sly and Robbie, Stone Love and released a song (Sometimes in Life) with Gyptian.
He also follows trends in Jamaican music for many years, and knows what being on a hit beat can do for an artiste.
“The benefits are being able to collaborate with other artistes under one setting as well as allowing the DJs and the sound (system) man to freely juggle a particular riddim in rotation,” he said.
Recently released, the UK Bubblers Riddim is the latest production from ZigeDub. The label’s previous rhythm albums include the Roadblock and Rudiments, which were released in 2023 and early this year, respectively.
Peter Hunnigale, a pillar of the British lovers rock scene, Althea Hewitt, Isha Blender, Peter Spence, Richie Davis and Sabrina Diva, also have songs on the UK Bubblers Riddim.
