Biden deserves a second term
Dear Editor,
Without a doubt Joe Biden is the best person to serve as US president for a second presidential term, a more suitable candidate than Donald J Trump.
Although it is an accepted fact that United States President Joe Biden performed somewhat poorly during the recently held
CNN political debate between himself and former President Trump, a single negative debate performance can never be used to fairly and accurately judge Biden’s overall presidency, which, frankly speaking, has so far been a great success, along with his greatest asset, Vice-President Kamala Harris.
Among President Biden’s major achievements is approximately 16 million jobs created over the past three years; a low unemployment rate of 3.9 per cent; reduction in the number of people filing for unemployment benefits from approximately 18 million to approximately 9 million; major economic legislations passed; the lowest child poverty rate achieved in the United States in 2023; an additional 10 million Americans have newly gained health insurance coverage; reduced hunger rate within the United States: the number of households reporting that they sometimes or often did not have enough food to eat dropped by 32 per cent; more judges confirmed to lower federal courts than any president since President John Kennedy; first majority non-white Cabinet in history, with most women in the Cabinet, including first woman treasury secretary, first LGBTQ+ and native American Cabinet officials, and first woman director of national intelligence.
Quite recently, President Biden signed an executive order providing undocumented spouses of American citizens with a direct and legal pathway to regularising their immigration status. Many Jamaicans living in the United States have welcomed this executive order, which will allow them to earn an income legally. The presidential order applies to those present in the US for at least 10 years and married to a United States citizen before June 17, 2024. Those so approved will be immediately granted work authorisation and the right to stay in the United States for up to three years while they apply for the prestigious US Green Card. That would then allow them to apply afterwards, after some five years, for United States citizenship.
Biden, in my opinion, has been one of the most successful US presidents to date and of the highest integrity and conduct and is poised to win the next presidential election in the United States. His economic policies have worked exceedingly well over the past three years and if re-elected he will be able to conclude some massive infrastructure projects.
A number of massive investments have occurred in the United States over the past three-and-a-half years. In a recent Camp David meeting with his family and senior presidential advisors, Biden was urged to stay in the presidential race and not step aside. I totally concur with that advice. Both former US presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama are still fearlessly supporting him as the Democratic Party’s representative to challenge Trump, backed by a prodigious level of endorsements from several high-profile billionaires and prominent Wall Street investments firms.
Now, more than ever, it is critical that all United States Democrats give their unyielding support to Biden (and Harris) rather than seek to replace him. He is needed for a second term to further secure America’s democracy and continue to unite the countries of the world.
I unreservedly support President Biden and do hope that he wins the election in November.
