Problem spots in Portland
PORT ANTONIO, Portland — Problem spots, including a drain on Manning Avenue that has been cleared twice in June but is still littered with debris, were among the areas that needed attention Tuesday as Port Antonio prepared for Hurricane Beryl.
The drain has a reputation for flooding when there is heavy rain, and the fear is that it will be no match for the downpour expected.
In contrast, there was progress made with the drain next to the Singer Jamaica store, which empties near the Errol Flynn Marina; it was being cleared. Preparations were more advanced at Singer and Courts, their large glass windows covered by heavy-duty plyboard.
As motorists lined up to fill their tanks, fisherfolk pulled in their fish pots and stored them at Bryan Bay fishing village.
Preparations were also underway at Portland Rehabilitation Centre, which will be used to accommodate the town’s homeless.
