Airports shuttered
JAMAICA’S two main international airports, Norman Manley and Sangster, were shuttered Tuesday night as the island braced for Hurricane Beryl.
Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) closed its runways at 10:00 pm, with the reopening, “to be determined based on the assessment of post-storm conditions and the safety of resuming operations”.
PAC Kingston Airport Limited, which operates NMIA, said passengers should contact their respective airlines for the most up to date information regarding flight cancellations and rescheduling.
“PAC Kingston Airport Limited is working closely with the Jamaica Meteorological Service and other relevant authorities to monitor the storm’s progress and will provide updates as the situation evolves,” said the company.
“We urge all residents and visitors to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this severe weather event. Stay informed by following official channels for weather updates and emergency instructions,” added PAC as it noted that updates will be posted on its social media pages X (formerly Twitter): @nmia_airport and Instagram: @nmia_airport.
In the meantime the operators of Sangster International Airport (SIA) said, based on the threat posed by Hurricane Beryl, it shut down operations at 11:59 pm Tuesday and will remain closed today to ensure safety during the hurricane’s passage.
“Following the hurricane a comprehensive assessment will be conducted to determine when it is safe to resume operations. Updates will be communicated promptly.
“Passengers are urged to contact their airlines directly for flight rescheduling information and confirmation of flight status, before travelling to the airport. The safety and well-being of our passengers and staff remain our utmost priority, and all necessary precautions are being taken to ensure a swift and safe resumption of operations once the hurricane has passed.
“Updates on flight operations and the effects of Hurricane Beryl on operations at the Sangster International Airport will be posted on the platforms, www.mbjairport.com, https://www.facebook.com/mbjairportsltd, https://www.instagram.com/mbjairportsltd/, https://x.com/MBJAIRPORT
