Preparing for Beryl: Hurricane tips to keep you safe
KINGSTON, Jamaica — As Jamaica braces for the possible impact of Hurricane Beryl, storm preparations should be underway. If you are unsure where to start or simply overwhelmed, don’t worry—Observer Online has you covered. Here are a few tips from the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management to safeguard your property and your family during the passage of the storm.
- Check the roof of your house thoroughly. Make sure hurricane shutters, hooks, and latches are intact, and carry out repairs where necessary.
- Ensure that the galvanised sheeting on the roof of your house is properly fastened.
- Secure important documents, paintings, and equipment from water damage using plastic bags.
- Have a supply of lumber, plywood, timber, etc., for battening down and securing windows and doors.
- Trim trees that are in close proximity to power lines or that hang over the house.
- Stock up on non-perishable food items, especially things that can be eaten without cooking or need very little preparation. Electricity may be off during a hurricane, leaving you without refrigeration.
- Place your emergency food supply in a waterproof container and store it in a closed box, cupboard, or trunk.
- Make sure you have emergency equipment in your home, including water boots, raincoats, flashlights, batteries, a portable radio, kerosene lamps, and matches.
- Keep simple first-aid equipment at home and ensure all emergency medications are in stock.
- Have a family disaster plan and know your evacuation route.
- Know the nearest shelters and other critical facilities such as police stations and health centres.
- Heed evacuation orders as they are announced.
