Carlene Davis releases cover of What If I Stumble
Gospel artiste Dr Carlene Davis has released a cover of United States gospel group DC Talk’s What If I Stumble.
The track, which was originally released 28 years ago, was written by Daniel Joseph and Kevin Michael McKeehan, who is globally known as Toby Mac.
“It was in early 2023 that my daughter, Shikisha, introduced me to the song which has been her anthem from back in the day, and suggested that I record the song and so we started the production in late October 2023,” Davis told the Jamaica Observer.
The song was released on VP Records’ VPal Label on May 10.
“My hope is that this track continues to remind us, as Christians, that God is the same, yesterday, today and forever. We have this living hope of His unconditional love; therefore, we must represent Him and stick to the assignment of winning more souls for the Kingdom of God,” Davis shared.
Davis launched her recording career in the 1970s while living in Toronto. She returned to Jamaica in the early 1980s and scored a series of radio-friendly hits, among them Like Old Friends Do, It Must Be Love, Going Down to Paradise, Winnie Mandela, Santa Clause Do You Ever Come To The Ghetto, and Dial My Number.
Tommy Cowan, who is the producer of What If I Stumble noted that Davis’s cover has its own memorable flair.
“The song carries a rhythm that’s original in its own way,” he told the Observer.
Davis will be performing next at Redemption Fest, slated for August 1, at Emancipation Park. She is also involved in the production of Hi-Pro Denbigh Gospel Extravaganza on August 3.
