Wellington shares vision for ISSA executive’s new term
Re-elected ISSA President Keith Wellington says the body’s new executive is looking at ways to enhance its ability to deliver.
Wellington, principal of St Elizabeth Technical High School, returned for a third term in an election on Friday. ISSA’s executive committee comprises the principals of all its member associations, which are secondary schools across the island.
There was little change to the executive at the annual general meeting with Wolmer’s Girls’ School principal Colleen Montague returning as vice-president.
Three new chairmen of sports committees were elected. Papine High School principal Leighton Christie will head the Manning Cup committee; Norman Manley High principal Roncell Brooks is in charge of urban cricket; and St Hugh’s High principal Andrea Bryan-Hughes is in charge of volleyball, swimming and hockey.
“The new executive body will take this opportunity to strengthen ISSA’s ability to deliver on its objectives, through improved organisational structure, greater exposure and support for our student-athletes, as well improved relationship and interactions with our various stakeholders,” Wellington told the Jamaica Observer. “There can be no doubt that the last four years have presented significant challenges for all sporting groups. However, ISSA has been able to ride these challenges throughout the COVID-19 period and emerged stronger as an organisation.
“We have also been able to address contentious issues related to our eligibility rules which clearly indicate the way forward and therefore our membership believes that we should be given the opportunity to continue guiding the way for our student-athletes.”
Wellington says the re-election of almost the entire executive “should be viewed as a vote of confidence in a team that has worked extremely hard over the last few years to provide our student-athletes with the opportunities to excel in difficult circumstances”.
Clarendon College’s David Wilson remains the treasurer while Clan Carthy High’s Hazel Cameron is the chairman of the finance committee.
William Knibb Memorial High’s Linvern Wright is the chairman of the daCosta Cup committee; The Queens School’s Jennifer Williams stays as the head of basketball; Garvey Maceo’s Ericka Ewbanks is head of netball; Alphansus Davis’s George Henry is in charge of rural cricket; Brown’s Town High’s Alfred Thomas stays as head of table tennis; Foga Road High’s Orett Wallace is in charge of junior boys’ and girls’ football; while Titchfield High’s Richard Thompson remains as chairman of Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships.
