US’ Athing Mu falls in 800m at trials, will not have chance to defend Olympic title
EUGENE, Oregon — US 800 metre runner Athing Mu will not be able to defend her Olympic titles in Paris this summer after falling during her race at the US trial on Monday.
According to an article from The Associated Press, Mu got tangled up in the middle of the track before falling to the ground.
US qualifying rules states that only the the top three finishers at trials make the Olympics, regardless of their resume.
Mu reportedly filed an appeal with USA Track and Field but was denied the protest.
Despite the fall, Mu could still go to Paris as part of the US relay pool. She was a part of the team’s gold-medal winning quartet in the 4×400 three years ago in Tokyo.
