Yale director set to thrill Harmony in Motion on Sunday
Concert organist and director of chapel music at Yale University Dr Nathaniel Gumbs is billed to headline a musical extravanganza this Sunday at the North Street campus of Kingston College.
Dubbed Harmony in Motion, the strong performance line-up will also include soprano Lori Burnett, Jamaica Youth Chorale and violinist Kamoy Gordon.
The programme promises a blend of classical and Jamaican music featuring the youth artistes at their very best.
Gumbs is a native of Bronx, NY, and has performed throughout the US and abroad, including Antigua, St Thomas, Ghana, Paris, and Munich.
He earned his undergraduate degree from Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia and his Master of Music degree from Yale University. In 2021, he completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Eastman School of Music. His principal teachers include Steven Cooksey, David Higgs, and Martin Jean.
Prior to his position at Yale, Gumbs served as director of music and arts and church organist at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC, where he led several hundred volunteer musicians and staff in four choirs and other ensembles. He has also been a frequent guest musician at Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem and served as organist and clinician for the Hampton University Ministers’ Conference.
In 2017 The Diapason magazine recognised Gumbs as one of 20 outstanding organists under 30 for his achievement in organ performance and church music.
Harmony in Motion is a joint fund-raiser between St George’s and St Matthew’s Anglican churches in downtown Kingston, as both work to amass needed amounts to repair their pipe organs. The two churches have a rich musical history presenting quality sacred music.
Showtime is 4:00 pm.
