Sunday Thai Love
Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards guest judge Angelique Beaubrun shares her Mystic Thai Sunday Brunch experience
As you enter Mystic Thai Kingston, tap the traditional brass gong. Why? It sets the tone for the explosion of bold flavours that will reverberate in your palate memory long after you leave this Sunday brunch. The exotic Thai décor and fun bossa nova music vibe were perfectly complemented with their welcome sexy Summer Breeze Gin & Juice in cocktail glasses rimmed with turquoise sugar. Don’t drink alcohol? Ask for their non-alcoholic fresh lime and ginger mocktail!
There were sprinklings of Thai love or “Rak” (Thai translation) in the careful attention to details in the diverse palate offerings, flavour profile combinations and service. We brunched on a tablescape of simple elegance with each dish being served on its own specially assigned dishware that was in a specific shape or colour variation.
We feasted on four appetisers with the start of a teapot-poured coconut curried sea bass noodle soup that was sublime. The sweet cilantro marinated Thai Mango Salad was just a joy-filled party in your mouth. The Crispy Citrus Shrimp and Calamari was tender, yummy and finished way too quickly (in a good way). The Honey Glazed Pork belly was moist and partnered perfectly in a sweet and salty duality.
This delicious start made me realise that I was going to throw my waistline to the wind and embrace all of the four main choices because life is too short. I had two favourites which started with the sweet and crunchy cardamom-infused Thai Tea French Toast with fresh coconut crème that gave me a definitive heavenly eye roll with every bite. Please look no further for the Best Basil Pesto Eggs Benedict with perfectly poached eggs on a soft, freshly baked sourdough lemongrass focaccia bread. If I was looking for some spice, it was brought with the Red Curry Chicken on a crispy croissant served with a tangy and cooling cucumber khimchi. I also think any fish lover would delight in the Soya Glazed Salmon served with sautéed mushrooms, crispy aspargus and mini potato cloud.
The desserts delicately brought the sweet tooth home. The Mango Crème brûlée was a rich mango custard delight in every mouthful. The healthier option of freshly chopped dragon fruit, slices of kiwi and strawberries with an accompanied low-sugared chia seed pudding reminded me that raw eating can make me smile in sugar- fix contentment.
A blissful tummy “thank you” or “Khop Khun” (Thai translation) for a sumptuous and decadent Thai culinary Brunch adventure!
