Jamaica 62 gets $20m investment from Wray and Nephew
J Wray and Nephew Limited has announced its partnership for the celebration of Jamaica 62, noting that it continues the company’s support of Jamaica’s cultural legacy.
The announcement came on June 12 with the signing of a $20m agreement with the Ministry of Culture, Entertainment, Gender and Sports (MCEGS).
“This partnership is a testament to our shared commitment to promoting Jamaican culture,” said Jean-Philippe Beyer, managing director at J Wray and Nephew Limited. “Along with MCEGS, we will harness the spirit of Jamaica 62 to inspire positive social change and create lasting memories for generations to come.”
During the ceremony at the ministry’s offices, Culture Minister Olivia Grange elaborated on the collaboration.
“[Partnerships] such as this affirm my belief that we are making significant progress in advancing and positioning culture within our society,” Minister Grange said. “J Wray and Nephew’s sponsorship support for JA62 — Emancipation and Independence celebration — builds on the original contract signed in January, where they served as the title sponsors for Reggae Month as the ‘Spirit of Reggae’. We are supremely grateful for the unwavering support and commitment.”
In January 2024, the Government of Jamaica and J Wray and Nephew, a subsidiary of the Campari Group, signed a three-year $90-million partnership agreement in support of Reggae Month activities.
Beyer said the plans for Jamaica 62 represents a unique opportunity to commemorate Jamaica’s nation’s rich cultural heritage and sporting legacy.
“As we look ahead to the upcoming Emancipation and Independence activities, we invite individuals and organisations from across the country to join us in celebrating Jamaica’s rich cultural tapestry and sporting heritage. Together, we can build a more vibrant, united, and prosperous nation for all,” Beyer said.
The Wray Rum partnership with the MCEGS for Jamaica 62 aims to showcase the transformative power of sport in uniting communities, inspiring change, and celebrating diversity. Through a range of initiatives, including football tournaments, cultural performances, and educational workshops, WOP will honour Jamaica’s past, celebrate its present, and envision its future as a beacon of hope and resilience.
The agreement will see the company’s iconic brand, Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum, sponsoring marquee events on the Jamaica 62 calendar including Jamaica Festival Song Competition, Jamaica Festival Queen Competition, Jamaica Culinary Arts Competition, National Festival of the Arts, the Governor General’s Independence Reception at King’s House, and the National Grand Gala. In addition to these sponsorships, JWN, through its brands, commits to executing a suite of projects.
