Terrelonge assures Diaspora they are valued
MONTEGO BAY, St James — State minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Alando Terrelonge used Monday’s first plenary session of the 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference to once again reassure participants that they are appreciated.
He told the meeting being held at Montego Bay Convention Centre in St James that the Diaspora’s recognition of Jamaica’s potential has made the achievement of economic goals an imperative, spurring on the Government.
“This included creating high-paid jobs; delivering affordable public services; and developing infrastructure such as roads, schools, hospitals, and police stations, all while maintaining economic strength and resilience. The Diaspora, therefore, should not go unnoticed, for these achievements are held largely by your contributions,” said Terrelonge, who has responsibility for Diaspora affairs.
He also recognised the “pivotal role” of the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council and the Global Jamaica Diaspora Youth Council, both established in 2020 under the stewardship of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson Smith.
“These organisations have become essential connections between the Diaspora and our ministry, our Government, and our country, promoting valuable exchanges that benefit Jamaica and our youth, in particular,” stressed Terrelonge.
The run-up to the conference has been plagued by protests from within the Diaspora who are demanding from the Government greater engagement on issues such as crime and corruption. The most recent one was staged last Saturday outside the Jamaican Embassy in Washington, DC.
“As we embark on these discussions let us remember that our unity is our strength. Together we can foster peace, enhance productivity, and empower our youth. By doing so we can all contribute to making Jamaica a brighter future for generations to come,” Terrelonge said.
Speaking at the same event, Minister Johnson Smith pointed out that this year’s conference has attracted the largest number of exhibitors and delegates ever, with more than 1,100 participants. The target had been 1,000.
“I feel really moved to celebrate that this continued growing and expanded support of movement by our nationals at home and abroad is something of which we can all collectively be proud,” said the minister.
The conference runs until Wednesday and is being held under the theme: ‘United for Jamaica’s Transformation: Fostering Peace, Productivity, and Youth Empowerment’.
