Style Observer (SO): Angus how would you say you have you raised your children? To chart their own course or to extend your legacy?
Angus Young (AY): To definitely chart their own course… Follow their hearts… don’t cheat, steal or hurt anyone.
SO: How important is generational wealth?
AY: First things first! My immediate focus is on teaching my daughters how to “fish (verb)”, as opposed to be given “fish (noun)”.
SO: How has your childhood impacted your approach to fatherhood?
AY: One’s childhood is definitely a frame of reference. For me, the lessons and experiences from my own upbringing guide how I interact with and nurture my children, helping me strive to provide a positive and supportive environment.
SO: When, how and where did you learn your money management skills?
AY: I started banking at a fairly young age and had the benefit of observing how my clients created wealth for themselves by using the bank. Truth be told, that was the first real lesson. I would also have surrounded myself with people who were like-minded and who I could learn from. There are books like Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Automatic Wealth: The 6 steps to Financial Independence by Michael Masterson that really influenced my thinking.
SO: How important is it to teach your family about managing money?
AY: As far as I am concerned, it should be a compulsory subject on the curriculum in primary and secondary schools.
SO: What’s the most impactful financial lesson you’ve ever learned?
AY: Cash is important but I view it as a non-revenue-generating asset.
SO: What has been your worst financial experience?
AY: I used my first ever bonus earned as an investment banker to supercharge my Honda Civic SiR!
SO: What was the teachable moment?
AY: My entire bonus literally melted in 15 seconds on a quarter-mile drag strip while racing the car. Painful. Fun, a lot of fun, probably too much fun, but in the end, painful!
SO: Who’s your Money Hero?
AY: My wife, Teneille. She understands risk way more than I do. For example, we were buying an apartment as a rental property and the opportunity arose to buy a second apartment that was right next to the first and she said we should buy both. I told her that I could only see a pathway to buying one and she said buy both and we will figure it out later. So said, so done.
SO: What’s your best family pastime?
AY: Being on vacation with my family is always epic. Memories to last a lifetime.
SO: What’s your best Father’s Day experience?
AY: Every night before I fall asleep, I try to identify one or two moments in the day that I am grateful for. Small things. I don’t really pay too much attention to Father’s Day.
SO: What’s your legacy goal?
AY: One legacy goal is for my wife and I to raise our kids in such a way that through them, we leave the world in a better state than we met it.
