Substannzz says real estate over cars even though ‘house caan skate pon toll’
Dancehall songs about money which reflect the society’s obsession with wealth and the status it grants have long been a staple of the music industry.
Now dancehall artiste Substannzz is adding his ‘two-cents’ with his get-money single Waan Rich which gives his perspective to the popular TikTok slang: ‘house caan skate pon toll’.
“Dem have this argument going around on TikTok, where the youths of today are thinking about acquiring a beast, a GLE, or a fat Bimmer or Benz, a vehicle that can skate pon toll, is what they need, but I am saying that is not the ultimate goal. Mi have a counter argument that it is better to own houses instead of getting a car. I would rather own five houses and still ah tek taxi,” the artiste, whose real name is Cavin Stewart, said.
The track, released on a rhythm production by Miami-based independent label Artekal Music, uses a relentless flow and compelling narrative to grab listeners. The song is already popping up on playlists at FAME, HITZ, IRIE FM and ZIP FM.
“People say dem love how it ketchy, cause real estate, ah sound financial advice and using that bit of slang about ‘house ah skate pon toll’ is inly adding to the debate,” he said.
A graduate of Seaforth High School, the St Thomas-based Substannzz draws inspiration from his life experiences, crafting a unique style that sets him apart from his peers. His innovative approach and forward-thinking mentality bring a fresh perspective to the music industry.
“I just try to be different in terms of the content of my music, too many of same kind of songs are out there,” he said.
He first jumped into the spotlight with his breakout single, Shadows, and he is now focused on taking his talent to the global stage. Top flight producers have begun to send beats his way.
He is set to release a raft of new singles such as Grip Rich on the Fiesta rhythm, Big Heart and Patience is Key.
