Launch of YSEP set for Trelawny June 28
TRELAWNY, Jamaica— The Youth Summer Employment Programme (YSEP) will this year be officially launched at the William Knibb Memorial High School in Trelawny by Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Minister of Local Government and Community Development Desmond McKenzie, on Friday, June 28.
Speaking at the regular monthly meeting of the Trelawny Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Thursday, Mayor of Falmouth Councillor C Junior Gager, who made the announcement, charged the Trelawny councillors to each submit the names of 25 young people towards the programme.
There are nine councillors in Trelawny, including Gager.
“Each councillor is asked to identify 25 [young] people between the ages of 17 to 29,” Gager stated.
“I ask the councillors especially, go out there and identify persons. We have a lot of young people out there doing nothing sometimes. Get them involved in the programme.”
Making his contribution to the 2024/25 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives, McKenzie announced that this year the YSEP will employ 10,000 young people.
He said the number of participants this year will be the largest since the inception of the programme in 2017.
