Pantry’s Breakfast @ Cafe Dolce
There’s a common misconception that the world runs on technology. Not true. The world, in fact, runs on the light but tasty fare sold in places like Progressive Plaza’s Cafe Dolce on Barbican Road. Busy professionals the world over will tell you that it’s not possible to get through the day if one can’t fuel up on the quick-but-filling food available at a Pret a Manger in London, Panera Bread in Los Angeles, or, here in Kingston, at our very own Cafe Dolce.
It was a search for just this kind of sustenance that led us to Cafe Dolce on a recent Saturday morning. As we strolled through the doors we were greeted by the eatery’s minimalist design and bold, inviting colours. The large menu board behind the counter listed a wide variety of tasty treats.
After a quick group consultation, we opted for buttermilk pancakes with a side of ham, a spinach omlette, smoked marlin bagel with cream cheese and cheese sandwiches for the toddlers in our crew. The food arrived promptly and was piping-hot. We were pleased to find that the pancakes were a fluffy, golden brown and covered in a light coating of powdered sugar while the omlette fairly burst with cheese, spinach and ham.
The cheese sandwiches were dripping with gooey melted cheese, but the toddlers took one look at the pancakes and promptly requested (read: insisted) that the owner thereof swap them for the sandwiches. Luckily, the pancake owner didn’t mind, and we proceeded to tuck in with gusto.
The two orders of mint tea we requested were not as hot as we would have liked but there were no complaints from the kids who chugged down two bottles of ice-cold Country Style Orange Juice.
The staff was quick and attentive throughout though it might have been a stretch to say they were enthusiastic. All in all, though, Cafe Dolce was a win and given its convenient location we’ll be stopping in again soon for breakfast and also to try their varied lunch options of salads, soups and sandwiches.
