It is imperative that NMIA operates efficiently
Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to the recent article titled ‘Travellers lament inconvenience of out of service pay stations, airport says nothing wrong’ published on June 10, 2024 in the Jamaica Observer.
The comments made by Sitara English-Byfield, CEO of Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) operator, PAC Kingston Airport Limited, are deeply concerning and reveal a significant disconnect from the realities faced by travellers. Despite numerous complaints from travellers about the malfunctioning pay stations, English-Byfield insists that the machines are operational.
The frustration over non-functioning pay stations is just one aspect of the broader problems plaguing the airport. Travellers frequently report dirty and non-functioning restrooms, poor passenger flow management, disastrous parking payment arrangements, and unwelcoming aesthetics. These issues cause significant inconvenience to travellers.
Transport Minister Daryl Vaz, the Airports Authority of Jamaica Board, and President Audley Deidrick must take immediate action. It is imperative that they step up and provide the necessary leadership to ensure that NMIA operates efficiently and upholds the standards expected of an international airport.
We need a proactive approach to ensure the airport provides a welcoming and efficient experience for all travellers.
