Government must not yield to protesters’ demands
Dear Editor,
As the stand-off between taxi and bus drivers and the police continues, it is essential to recognise the underlying issues that have led to this point. For far too long, public transportation operators have flouted traffic laws with impunity, putting countless lives at risk.
The recent surge in traffic violation tickets is not a mere inconvenience but a necessary step towards accountability and road safety. Minister Daryl Vaz and the Government’s efforts to reform the public transportation system are laudable and long overdue.
The introduction of stricter regulations and enforcement is a crucial step towards curbing the carnage on our roads. It is unacceptable that some operators are resisting these measures, and their protests should not be allowed to intimidate the authorities into relaxing the new policies.
The police must hold their ground and continue to enforce the traffic laws without fear or favour. Taxi and bus operators must simply comply. The Government must also seize this opportunity to expedite the implementation of the long-awaited school bus system, especially in rural areas, to ensure the safe transportation of students while improving the system to be more friendly to wheelchairs and special needs passengers.
The responsibility of being a prominent advocate for road safety must not become a political football. It is imperative that every well-thinking Jamaican step up to applaud and commend Minister Vaz for his efforts to address this critical issue plaguing the nation’s public transportation for decades. It is time for serious accountability and a culture of safety to take precedence over the interests of a few recalcitrant operators.
The public must rally behind the Government’s efforts to create a safer and more disciplined transportation system. We cannot afford to compromise on road safety, and the Government must not yield to the demands of those who prioritise their undisciplined interests over the lives of innocent citizens.
Let us stand firm on this critical issue and support the Government’s efforts to create a safer Jamaica for all.
