Cheers to High Tea and Good Company
Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards judge Stacy Belnavis an avid tea lover, took the opportunity on Thursday, May 23, to revisit High Tea at the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel. Accompanying her were Kelley Wong-Henry and Lily Henry.
The concept of high tea dates back to the mid-19th century, originating in Britain as a substantial meal for the working class after their long hours of labour. Unlike the dainty afternoon teas enjoyed by the upper echelons, high tea was served at high dining tables and included more substantial fare to satisfy robust appetites. Over time, this tradition evolved, and its essence of fusing social camaraderie with culinary pleasure has been beautifully preserved at Terra Nova.
Held every second and fourth Thursday of the month from 3:00pm to 5:30pm, the pouring of tea has become a beloved must-do for locals and visitors alike,’ offering a delightful reprieve from the mundane. Indeed, it proved the perfect backdrop for a ‘Mommy and Me’ date for my friend Kelley and her daughter Lily. Terra Nova offers more than an afternoon indulgence; it’s a journey through time, blending the savoury grandeur of British tradition with Kingston’s vibrancy.
We arrived at 3:00 pm and Lily was quite excited as this was her first ever high tea experience. Although we were early, I was quite surprised as, others had arrived before us. Always a good sign! We were seated and the adults promptly presented with welcome sparkling cocktails. Keen attention was given by the hotel to ensure the tables boasted intricate and luxe details of all-white crochet and linen tablecloths and napkins as well as polished silver cutlery.
The buffet comprised a selection of Caribbean Dreams and Bromley teas, coffee, callaloo quiche, devilled eggs, pickled cucumber sandwiches, assorted finger sandwiches, ribbon chicken, petit fours, scones with clotted cream and strawberry preserve, tea cakes of the day, cookies, cheesecake, assorted cupcakes, fruit and cheese platter, and the absolute must-have Hampden Rum Cake.
Terra Nova’s High Tea’s offerings never disappoint and were everything I remembered from my prior visit. The staff were all polite and attentive, which is what one expects of the Terra Nova. Additionally, all the treats were delicious and saw us going back for more. When asked what was her favourite treat, Lily remarked, “The devilled eggs are the best! I love them.”
High tea at the Terra Nova was positively and delectably tea-lightful! A definite must-do when one wants a reprieve from the buzzing capital city.
Special Note:
The tea selection could have been enhanced by the inclusion of more exotic tea blends. The Tea Forte brand was on display but was not available during our dining experience.
