PPV strike unjustified
Dear Editor,
The current strike action by public transport operators is extremely unjustified and reflects the worst of our country.
These operators operate with impunity and are in favour of a system in which they rack up tickets and pay what they feel like, with no repercussions. I have spoken to drivers and most seem to understand that given the nature of their daily operations, being issued a ticket by the police is par for the course.
An interesting argument operators have made is that their licences are their means of survival. I then ask: Why not protect it by following the law? The police can’t prosecute you once you are compliant.
I believe the system is tailored to ensure we do not return to the days when operators could amass thousands of tickets and still operate. Many lives have been lost to these rogue operators
While I imagine the Government has an incentive to yield, given the pending elections, I pray they stand firm and choose the good of our country over political expediency.
