PAJ says threats against TVJ journalist an attack on press freedom
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) says the widespread threats and abuse against Television Jamaica (TVJ) journalist Giovanni Dennis since his special report highlighting illegal drag racing in Jamaica are an attack on press freedom.
The association made the comment in a statement on Wednesday while noting its shock at the public’s response to the report.
The statement was signed by President Milton Walker.
The attacks have come since part one of Dennis’ report aired on Sunday, June 9 during TVJ’s Prime Time News.
Noting that it condemns the threats made against Dennis, the PAJ said “Journalists/reporters must be allowed to do their work free from fear and intimidation from whatever source.”
The association said the matter has been reported to the police and escalated to the Cyber Crimes Unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
TVJ also publicised the threats in its Prime Time News on Monday night.
“We urge the police to do all in its power to investigate these threats and deal with the culprits involved,” the association said.
In the meantime, the PAJ is urging journalists islandwide to be firm and resolute in their pursuit of stories and not to be intimidated by anyone.
