WATCH: Cabbies in Portland withdraw service in all-island strike
PORTLAND, Jamaica— Taxi operators in Port Antonio, Portland have withdrawn their services as a part of the all-island protest action being taken by public transportation operators on Monday.
Drivers who ply the route mainly between Port Antonio and Hector’s river in the parish have gathered at Foreshore Road with their vehicles parked.
While some of the operators hold placards, others could be heard demanding justice and expressing their ire over the new traffic fines and the reinstatement of driver’s license suspensions in a video capturing the strike in the town.
They were also having discussions with lawmen on the scene.
The transportation strike was announced on Sunday in response to a June 5 meeting between stakeholders and the Island Traffic Authority over having driver’s licenses suspended due to demerit points.
