Thompson-Herah set for New York GP today
BACK-to-back Olympic Games sprint double champion Elaine Thompson-Herah lines up in the 100m at the USA Track and Field New York Grand Prix at Icahn Stadium in Manhattan today.
This is her first outing since the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, two weeks ago. There, Thompson Herah trailed home at the back of the field in 11:30 seconds.
Thompson Herah, who is one of 15 Jamaicans in action at the meet this weekend, was originally down to compete at the Grenada Invitational but that meet was cancelled.
Today she will line up against the USA’s Aleia Hobbs, who has run 10.88 seconds already, fourth-best in the world; Hobbs’ countrywomen Celera Barnes and Kennedy Blackmon; and New Zealand’s Zoe Hobbs.
Roje Stona was second in the men’s discus throw yesterday with 65.96m, and Fedrick Dacres was fourth with 65.70m.
The sprint hurdles are expected to be competitive, and world champion Danielle Williams and Yanique Thompson will line up in the 100m race where they will match strides with world record holder Tobi Amusan of Nigeria, world indoor champion Devynne Charlton of The Bahamas, and former world record holder Kendra Harrison of the USA.
Fresh from his season-opening run at Racers Grand Prix (GP) in Kingston last weekend, Commonwealth Games champion Rasheed Broadbell and Tyler Mason will go up against a trio of talented and fast Americans comprising Daniel Roberts, Trey Cunningham, and Cordell Tinch, in the 110m hurdles.
Broadbell ran 13.24 seconds last week, the fastest by a Jamaican so far, and Mason will hope to complete the race as he was disqualified for a false start at Racers GP on June 1.
World championships relay medallist Stacey Ann Williams will be confident after running 50.86 seconds — just off her season’s best — to win the 400m at the Racers GP, and she will be joined by Junelle Bromfield as they take on the red-hot Sydney McLaughlin- Levrone who ran a season’s best 52.70 seconds over the 400m hurdles and 22.07 seconds in the 200m — the second best in the world this year.
World championships 4x400m relay medalist Zandrion Barnes goes up against Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Roberts, World and Olympic champion Kirani James of Grenada, and Wayde Van Niekerk of South Africa in the men’s 400m.
Ashanti Moore and Jodean Williams are the Jamaicans in the women’s 200m and they will race against Americans Tamara Clarke, Gabby Thomas and Candace Hill.
Carey McLeod, who recently won his first Diamond League event, will line up in the men’s long jump against Marquis Dendy and Jarrion Lawson of the USA, and Laquan Nairn of The Bahamas.
National champion Tissanna Hickling will contest the women’s long jump against world leader Tara Davis-Woodhall and her American compatriot Jasmine Moore.
Jordan Scott will contest the men’s triple jump against Americans Donald Scott and Chris Carter, and Jah-Nhai Perinchief of Bermuda.
Kimberly Williamson is down to contest the women’s high jump where she will face the USA’s Vashti Cunningham, and Japan’s Nagisa Takahashi.
