Singing Prof teaches Luv U Jamaica
A professor of marketing and consumer behaviour at The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona campus, Dr Trevor Smith can be heard singing when not guiding students on the logistics of commerce.
The Singing Professor released his first song, Luv U Jamaica, on June 1.
With the flurry of negative coverage about his homeland, Smith wanted to show that patriotism is not uncommon in Jamaica.
“I was motivated to write Luv U Jamaica as a response to the negative press re crime, corruption and economic conditions that Jamaica continues to receive both locally and overseas, some of which is unfounded,” he said in an interview with the Jamaica Observer’s Splash. “I therefore felt duty-bound to write and sing this song to articulate some of the positives about Jamaica.”
Smith got assistance from some experienced hands for Luv U Jamaica. They include singer Lymie Murray on backing vocals, keyboardist Bowie McLaughlin, and engineer Delroy “Fatta” Pottinger.
While Luv U Jamaica is his first release, Smith recorded the reflective
Oh Mama last year, in dedication to his mother who died during the height of the pandemic.
Born in Falmouth, Trelawny, Smith attended Excelsior High School and Cornwall College. Although academics was priority, he had a passion for music and admired artistes such as Dennis Brown, Michael Jackson, The Spinners, and The Chi-Lites.
Smith earned bachelor of arts degrees in mathematics and computer science from The UWI. He also holds a master in business administration from Barry University in Florida, and doctorate in business from Nova Southeastern University, which is also located in that state.
