Queen of Soul off the mark
Former champion trainer Anthony “Baba” Nunes was very relieved and happy after his filly Queen Of Soul produced a brilliant performance to break her three-year-old maiden tag last Saturday at Caymanas Park.
Going off as the 4-5 favourite, Queen of Soul was ridden to victory by Raddesh Roman, winning by three and a half lengths in the five-and-a-half furlong event. The fast-finishing She’s Adorable, with Paul Francis aboard, was second, while third place went to Toronado, ridden by Steel Prince Holder.
According to Nunes, Queen Of Soul is a very good filly, but they have struggled to get her to settle down due to several issues she developed over the past seven months.
“She is a really nice filly, but she has so many issues because she has given us a boxing lesson since November,” said Nunes. “She has galloped twice in six months. She is talented, but she has a lot of problems,” he said.
The veteran trainer pointed out that the filly is bred to go the distance, and he hopes this victory will help her to be more focused at the races.
“We actually just gave her this run, but wherever she turns up, we will be fine. She won this one for us,” Nunes added.
“She is bred to get a little distance of ground, and so if she stays sound, then she can be a very good filly. She lost on her debut to Run Julie Run [the 1000 Guineas winner] by a nose, so wherever Run Julie Run is, then she should be. But she has issues,” he stated.
