Mills thrilled by successful staging of Racers Grand Prix
Organiser of the Racers Grand Prix Glen Mills is expressing gratitude to athletes and supporters following Saturday’s successful staging of the showpiece event inside the National Stadium.
Mills pointed to the encouraging crowd support and breathtaking performances on the track and in the field as the latest instalment of the event unfolded to much acclaim, delivering two world leads, impressive performances throughout and a matched stadium record.
“We are thrilled with the level of competition and the stellar performances we witnessed,” said Mills, founder and head coach of the Racers Track Club and chairman of the organising committee.
“The dedication and hard work of these athletes are truly inspiring. Their participation has elevated the Racers Grand Prix to new heights, and we thank them for their commitment and excellence.”
Mills’ young charge Oblique Seville, the two-time World Athletics Championships 100m finalist, his Jamaican compatriot, triple jump medal favourite and St Lucian sprinter Julien Alfred grabbed the headlines with impressive performances in their respective events.
Seville, who clearly had more in the tank, clocked a personal best and meet record of 9.82 seconds in the 100m to beat world champion American Noah Lyles, 9.85, in the process setting the fastest time in the world so far and the fastest by a Jamaican since 2016 when Usain Bolt clocked 9.81 seconds.
Jumping prodigy Jaydon Hibbert leaped to a world leading 17.75m in the triple jump, which also registers as the stadium record, while Alfred’s 10.78 personal best win in the women’s 100m equalled the stadium record in the event.
Devon Blake, CEO of the Racers Grand Prix, thanked the sponsors, fans, and all stakeholders for their unwavering support. The meet enjoyed an impressive turnout in spite of heavy afternoon showers, signalling the spectators’ confidence in the event.
“This event would not have been possible without the incredible support of our sponsors, fans, and stakeholders. Their enthusiasm and engagement have been instrumental in making this year’s Racers Grand Prix a phenomenal success. We are grateful for their contributions and look forward to continuing this journey together,” said Blake.
The meet’s list of sponsors included Adidas, Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Sports Development Foundation, Airport Authority of Jamaica, Red Stripe, KFC, Jamaica National Group, Digicel, Gatorade,
Television Jamaica, the Jamaica Tourist Board, Jamaica Pegasus, The Best Dressed Chicken, Double Seven, the Jamaica Observer, and Main Event.
Blake welcomed the vote of confidence from the corporate community and is confident the meet will continue to confirm its place among the leading track and field events on the planet.
“With the continued support of our sponsors and the passionate athletics community, the Racers Grand Prix remains a beacon of excellence in the world of track and field. We look forward to building on this success and delivering even more spectacular events in the future,” Blake said.
