Noah Lyles hoping to break National Stadium 100m record at Racers Grand Prix
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Fans may see one of the fastest times on Jamaican soil on Saturday as six-time World Champion Noah Lyles says he’s looking to break the National Stadium record when he competes in the 100m at the Racers Grand Prix.
The 26-year-old American, who’s running at the meet for the third time, is preparing for the Paris Olympics where he hopes to win the individual sprint double.
Lyles’ personal best in the 100m is 9.83 seconds which he did to win gold at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest last year.
Yohan Blake’s 9.75 seconds, done at the National Championships in 2012, is the fastest 100m time ever run at the National Stadium, and Lyles says he’s looking to make history.
“What’s the stadium record, 9.75? Let’s go after that why not? Shoot for the stars, aim for the moon. I’d love to see a PR (personal record) tomorrow and the times I’ve been seeing (in training and the season) suggests I will PR tomorrow,” said Lyles.
Lyles will face competition from young Jamaican sprint star Oblique Seville, Britain’s Zharnel Hughes and Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala.
