Sweet Smooth Squirrel
Television presenter Richard Pottinger makes his production début
Television presenter Richard “Richie” Pottinger says his love for music drove him to become a member of a marching band (Magnificent Troopers) at an early age with the legendary selector Ricky Trooper.
“Music was my refuge for peace and tranquillity. I had friends who wanted to pursue music, but they didn’t have the right plan, so that led me to create my own label, so that I could get their music out,” Pottinger said in an interview with the Jamaica Observer recently.
Last month, he made his production début with the Smooth Squirrel rhythm released on his Richie Rich Records label. It features the tracks
New Money by Swazz, Waggonist by Iview, Fendii by Kapri, Ready by Asuh Boss, Zone Out by Afta Shock, and Star Life by Rion Venici.
“All of the artistes are like family, so we had a natural chemistry. The whole vibe was good; it’s like this project and interaction with the artistes was meant to be,” said Pottinger.
He has been a presenter on TVJ’s Intense since 2021.
“As a television presenter and a talent recruit I’m on the quest to find the next big thing in music. I’m more into creating something new and a be a part of that journey. My objective is to make music that can put a positive impact on our culture and create waves internationally,” Pottinger affirmed.
Originally from Central Village in St Catherine, Pottinger grew up in Ocho Rios.
He is concerned about the lyrical content and the graphic images that are portrayed in local music videos.
“Everybody is doing the same thing; the same lyrics and same content in videos. I love watching music videos because it’s a way to express yourself and let people remember the music. But nowadays you’re left with a ‘what was that’ question after you watch it. The videos are dark, almost feel evil. Sometimes I think they take it too far,” he shared.
Pottinger said that with the establishment of his Richie Rich label he plans to make a difference in music.
“I want to be able to make a difference. I want my label to be known for always producing good music. The label was really started because I saw the immense talent out there in young artistes. They don’t always get the break they deserve, and if I can give them the opportunity to write and release good music, then my goal has been accomplished,” he said.
