New lights for stadium ahead of World Cup qualifier
KINGSTON, Jamaica— Lights at a cost of $15 million will arrive and be installed at the National Stadium in Kingston over the weekend ahead of the Concacaf/ World Cup Qualifier scheduled to take place at the venue on June 6, 2024.
The disclosure was made in a news release from Sport Minister Olivia Grange on Thursday.
She stated that the lights at the stadium have dimmed over time, pointing out that the addition, along with other recent installations, will improve the lighting of the stadium.
“The National Stadium lights over time have been less than optimal and so Independence Park Limited has installed LED lights on Tower Four and some additional lamps on the Canopy, pending further upgrades. This latest shipment of equipment, once installed, will improve the lighting substantially.”
“The new lights will supplement the existing lights which will exceed the One Thousand (1,000) lumens which is the minimum requirement for international matches,” the release said.
The release added that the National Stadium has had no significant improvement to its infrastructure since it opened in 1962.
It said further that the tower lights at the stadium are over 25 years old and the redevelopment of the National Stadium will begin with the revamping of the lighting system.
