Jackson, Clayton to line up for Diamond League in Norway
Two-time World Championships women’s 200m gold medallist Shericka Jackson is to contest the first of two Wanda Diamond League 200m races in a matter of four days when she lines up at the Bislett Games inside Bislett Stadion in Oslo, Norway, on Thursday.
On Sunday, Jackson, three Jamaican women’s intermediate hurdlers Rushell Clayton, Andrenette Knight and Janieve Russell and male discus thrower Fedrick Dacres are to return to competition at the BAUHAUS-Galan at Olympic stadium in Stockholm, Sweden.
Today, nine Jamaicans are down to participate in the sixth stop of the Diamond League series with Jackson competing in the half-lap race for the second time this season. She ran 22.82 seconds at the previous Diamond League meet in Marrakech, Morocco, on May 19.
American Britany Brown, who has a season’s best 22.35, will go into the race with the fastest time. Great Britain’s Daryll Neita, a finalist at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, last year, Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith of the Ivory Coast and Anavia Battle of the United States are also down to compete.
Clayton, the world leader and frontrunner in the Diamond League women’s 400m hurdles series, will seek to extend her unbeaten streak to three-straight after she won at both the Jamaica Athletics Invitational and at the meet in Marrakech.
Compatriots Knight and Russell, who had also joined her in the World Championships final last year, are down to compete against the likes of Anna Ryzhykoa of the Ukraine and Amalie Iuel of Norway.
National champion Rohan Watson and former world champion Yohan Blake will line up in the men’s 100m against American Brandon Hicklin and Britain’s Jeremiah Azu, both of whom have run under 10.00 seconds already this season. South Africa’s Akani Simbini could start as race favourite along with Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs of Italy.
After getting over his injury sustained at the World Athletics Relays in The Bahamas, World Indoor bronze medallist Rusheen McDonald is to return to competition in the men’s 400m.
He is set to line up against South Africa’s Lythe Pillay, World Championships silver medallist Matthew Hudson-Smith of Great Britain, former world and Olympic champion Kirani James of Grenada and Leungo Scotch of Botswana.
Natoya Goule-Toppin will contest the women’s 800m against the likes of Prudence Sekgodiso of South Africa and Tsige Duguma of Ethiopia, both of whom have already run under 1:58.00 this season.
Dacres, who has a season’s best 66.30m, which is just under a metre short of the qualifying mark for the Olympic Games, is to line up against world record holder Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania, Kristjan Ceh of Slovenia, Matthew Denny of New Zealand and reigning world champion Daniel Stahl of Sweden.
