Lucien Harrison takes on ready-to-wear
Fashionistas, family and friends of Lucien Harrison came out to support his very first ready-to-wear collection showcase at his recent showing at the offices of Rocketship in Orchid Village Plaza.
“The primary objective of my fashion show was to début my inaugural ready-to-wear collection and première my runway show, marking the first instalment of a biannual series. This event not only showcases my designs but it also sets the stage for future shows, which will… feature new and exciting collections,” Harrison told the Jamaica Observer in an interview shortly after the event.
Harrison, a former student at St Andrew Technical High School, has been involved in fashion designing and styling for the past 10 years.
Originally from the community of Seaview Gardens — where he grew up with his mother and six siblings — he once worked as a barber before finding his own beat as one of fashion’s in-demand talents.
To date, Harrison has designed outfits and styled several celebrities, including television presenter Simone Clarke, recording artistes Jada Kingdom and Shenseea, as well as beauty queens.
His collections have graced runways and events in numerous countries, including Canada, Qatar, Indonesia, and China.
“Before pursuing fashion, I worked as a barber for about three years. I enjoyed the creativity and precision that came with cutting and styling hair, but I eventually realised that my true passion lay in fashion design. I wanted to create something that would be worn and appreciated by people, rather than just a temporary hairstyle. Additionally, I found that the repetitive nature of cutting hair day in and day out was starting to stifle my creativity. I decided to take the leap and pursue fashion full time, and it’s been an incredible journey ever since,” Harrison disclosed.
The designer told the Observer that he is self-taught.
“I’ve had the opportunity to work with amazing clients, collaborators, and mentors, and I’ve learned so much from each of them. There have been moments of doubt and frustration, but the thrill of creating something new and seeing my designs come to life has always kept me going. I’ve grown not only as a designer but also as a person, and I’m grateful for the experiences and lessons that have shaped me into the creative professional I am today,” said Harrison.
The Ready to Wear by Lucien Harrison line offers pieces “to suit every style and occasion” — casual streetwear, day dresses, statement tops, denim, along with tailored palazzo pants, suits, and evening gowns.
Rising fashion designer Tashika Grant also showcased her Tashikani by Tash line.
“I chose to collaborate with Tashika Grant because I have immense respect for her dedication, passion, and inclusive approach to the designing community. I had been seeking a local designer whose aesthetics aligns with my brand’s vision, and Tashika’s work resonates perfectly with our style. Her stunning collection, Tashikani by Tash, will undoubtedly bring a fresh perspective to our runway show,” Harrison explained.
He has formed a partnership with shipping company Rocketship, who provided support at his début fashion showcase.
“My partnership with Rocketship was a dream come true. They embraced my creative vision and provided invaluable support, resources, and expertise to bring my collection to life. Not only did they offer guidance and mentorship, but they also generously provided their stunning space, allowing me to showcase my designs in an immaculate and aesthetically pleasing environment. Rocketship’s team went above and beyond, physically helping me to create and set up the show, ensuring every detail was perfect. Their collaboration and belief in my artistry made my début collection and fashion show a resounding success. I’m forever grateful for their partnership and support,” said Harrison.
