Accountants urged to work towards nation building
DENNIS V Brown, former PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Jamaica partner and recipient of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica (ICAJ) 2023 Distinguished Member Award, is urging accountants to see their role as pivotal in driving national development and fostering transparency.
While delivering his acceptance speech at the annual awards banquet held at Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston recently, Brown reflected on his years of service and dedication to the accounting profession.
“Over the years the greatest reward has not been the accolades, but the impact. Witnessing the young accountants progressing up the ladder, collaborating on intricate challenges, and over time contributing to a stronger financial foundation for businesses and the country is gratifying,” he said.
Brown was selected to receive the award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to ICAJ and the accountancy profession, both locally and internationally. With a remarkable career spanning decades he has left an indelible mark on the accounting profession through his leadership, integrity, and dedication.
Throughout his career Brown has held various leadership roles within ICAJ, including serving as chairman of the Accounting Standards Committee. Under his guidance Jamaica successfully adopted International Financial Reporting Standards, positioning the country as a global trendsetter. His innovative strategy, acknowledged for its effectiveness, gained recognition from the International Federation of Accountants and was adopted as a model for others to follow.
Subsequently, he represented Jamaica at prestigious international forums such as the Inter-governmental Group on International Standards of Accounting and Reporting at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Developments in Geneva. He used the platform to showcase his expertise and leadership in advancing accounting standards on a global scale.
Referencing the many opportunities within the accounting field, Brown urged fellow accountants to continue pushing boundaries and contributing to the advancement of the profession.
“This award is not just a recognition of past efforts,” he stated. “I make it an opportunistic call to action for the future of our prestigious profession. I urge every single one of you, whether you are just starting out or a seasoned professional, to continue in your efforts, pushing the boundaries. There will be dark tunnels to navigate, mountains to climb, roadblocks to clear. Yes, the journey may be lonely at times but remember, it is part of the course,” he said.
Looking ahead, Brown expressed optimism about the future of the accounting profession, stating, “I can say that the future of accounting is brimming with possibilities. Accountants are increasingly key players in driving business growth, fostering transparency, and navigating the complexities of national development.”
Reflecting on Brown’s achievements, ICAJ President Eric Scott noted his exemplary service.
“Dennis Brown’s exemplary service and unwavering commitment to excellence serve as a beacon of inspiration for current and future generations of accountants. His contribution to the profession, both within ICAJ and beyond, is truly commendable,“ he said.
