Gem Myers, King happy with show
While she wished more patrons would have attended her ‘GEM…With A Little Help From Her Friends’ show on Mother’s Day, Gem Myers is pleased with how things turned out.
The event, which took place at Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in St Andrew, had American rhythm and blues singer Evelyn “Champagne” King as headliner.
“As promoter and performer it is hard work dealing with all the different personalities involved. Never a dull moment. I am particularly pleased that I was able to deliver the beautiful show I promised and that our special guest came and did an excellent show,” Myers told the Jamaica Observer.
King, who sang on tracks, did the songs for which Jamaicans knew her first. Among them were Shame, I’m in Love and Love Come Down. Accompanied by husband Freddie Fox, she was in good nick throughout her set.
During Shame, her breakout hit from 1977, King showed her skills on the congas and dance moves that belied her 63 years.
There were also strong performances from Myers with harmony singers Irie Sistarz, George Nooks, Delano McFarlane, and Kevoy Clarke, all backed by the Fabulous Five band.
Several well-known personalities attended the ninth ‘GEM…With A Little Help From Her Friends’. Among them were Beres Hammond, Kingston Mayor Andrew Swaby, and Portmore Mayor Leon Thomas.
