Trey Williams, Mattea Issa lead JGA National Champs after day two
Junior golfer Trey Williams set down the best individual score of the Jamaica Golf Association’s National Championships at the end of round two of the three-round event when he scored one under par 71 to overtake day-one leader Zandre Roye, while Mattea Issa maintained her three-stroke lead over Jodi Munn-Barrow.
Williams’ 71 came from three birdies and an eagle on the front nine but that was cancelled out by his three bogeys and a double bogey for a par 36 at the halfway mark. For the back nine, he scored a birdie and an eagle to be three under par at that stage but was pegged back by a bogey on hole number 16 and another on 18 for one under 35 to close the round at 71 and stamp his class on the championship by being the sole leader. His two-day total was four over par 148 on the back of his five over par 77 and one under par 71 over the two days, respectively.
Day-one leader Roye dropped to second place but just one stroke back on five over par 149. His scores were par 72 on day one and five over 77 on day two.
Former national champion Oshae Haye maintained his day one third place with another three over par 75 for a two-day total of six over par 150, which is just two strokes off the lead.
On the ladies side, Issa and many-time national champion Munn-Barrow both scored nine over par 81 in the second round, which allowed Issa to maintain her three-point lead after two rounds. Issa was on 18 over par 162 (81, 81), while Munn-Barrow was on 21 over par 165 (84, 81).
The third and final day will tee off at 8:30 am at the Caymanas Golf Course in St Catherine.
If Williams and Issa win this year’s championships, it would mean that two juniors overcome the best golfers on the island and give the juniors a fillip for the upcoming Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship which will be played in Jamaica in early July.
A new champion will be crowned this year as last year’s winners, William Knibbs and Michelle McCreath, have not factored in this year’s championships.
