‘3-love better than 2-love’
Windies aim for sweep against South Africa today
The West Indies will be aiming for a clean sweep of their three-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series against South Africa when both teams face off in the final match at Sabina Park at 2:00 pm on Sunday afternoon.
The West Indies, led by an unbeaten knock of 67 from Vice-Captain Roston Chase, defeated the South Africans by 16 runs in their second match of the series on Saturday, taking a 2-0 lead in the series.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the West Indies piled up 207 for seven off their 20 overs. Chase’s unbeaten innings, which came off 38 balls, included seven fours and a six. He was well supported by Captain Brandon King (36), Kyle Mayers (32), Andre Fletcher (29), and Romario Shepherd (26).
In reply, the South Africans were reduced to 191 for seven off their 20 overs. Quinton de Kock, with 41, and Reeza Hendricks, 34, were the leading scorers. Gudakesh Motie was the main wicket-taker for the Windies, grabbing three for 22 from his four overs. There was one wicket each for Romario Shepherd, Chase, and Akeal Hosein, while the other wicket came via a run-out.
Chase, who has been having a good series so far, said that he is confident that they can close out the series with a victory today.
“We have started the series well as we are two love up, but I think three-love is better than two,” he said after the game on Saturday. “I think it is just for us to look at some of the areas that we were weak today and plan on execute them better, and the areas that we did well, plan on execute better on them.”
The Windies got off to a promising start with openers King and Johnson Charles putting on 26 for the first wicket. Charles, who made seven runs, lost his wicket in the fourth over when he was caught by Ryan Rickelton off the bowling of Lungi Ngidi at midwicket. Despite the early loss of Charles, King was joined by Kyle Mayers and the pair took the score to 51 off the six power play overs.
King, who played some delightful shots during his innings, was caught at long off by Wiaan Mulder for 36 off the bowling of Nqaba Peter, who was picking up his first T20I wicket. King’s 36 came off 22 balls and included three sixes and two fours.
Mayers, who played an aggressive innings, made a quick-fire 32 off 16 balls before he handed Peter his second wicket of the match when he was caught at midwicket by Rickelton. Mayers’ knock included three sixes and two fours. Chase and Fletcher shared a 54-run fourth-wicket partnership, moving the West Indies’ score to 138 in 15 overs before the latter was dismissed. Fletcher, who was given out leg before wicket by a straight delivery from Andile Phehlukwayo, hit two sixes and a four in his 18-ball knock.
Chase was joined by Shepherd at the crease, and they shared a 64-run fifth-wicket partnership, moving the total to 202 in 18 overs before Shepherd was dismissed for 26 runs off 13 balls. Shepherd struck three sixes and one four before he was caught in the deep by Reeza Hendricks off the bowling of Phehlukwayo.
Peter, with two for 32, Ngidi with two for 41, and Phehlukwayo with two for 51 from his three overs were the leading wicket-takers for the South Africans.
In reply, the South Africans got off to a flying start with openers De Kock and Hendricks putting off 81 off just 32 balls off just five overs. However, after the dismissal of both batsmen in quick succession, the South African innings crumpled as they lost wickets at regular intervals to hand the West Indies the victory.
