RajahWild kick-starts Sound Check
Red-hot dancehall artiste RajahWild kicked off the monthly Sound Check series at Dubwise Café on Lady Musgrave Road in Kingston with a high-energy performance on Thursday night.
With a mostly young adult and business professional demographic in attendance, the Wild Out deejay pelted the venue with hit after hit.
RajahWild, at age 20, is one of the leaders of the new wave of dancehall acts currently impacting the music space.
Backed by the Dub Squad Band, the youngster’s commanding stage presence, vocal charisma, and growing catalogue had patrons wanting even more.
While having a strong discography of mostly club bangers, there were mellow sounds for the ladies. He rode high with the Pharmacy Records/Bell Bell Entertainment-produced 100 Miles and Carry On, which is produced by Unapologetic Muziq.
The Rvssian-produced Go Go, the Jiggy D-sculptured Dolly House, and last summer’s blockbuster hit Wild Out produced by Zimi Records were well-received by those in attendance.
Prior to RajahWild’s performance, DJs Heavy D Chromatic and Nico Lee whipped up the crowd with hit after hit.
Music industry veteran and artiste manager Carleene Samuels is credited as the mastermind behind Sound Check.
“Sound Check is my attempt and my love for Jamaican culture and bringing out the new talent and also some of the well-seasoned talent. Basically, it’s a live performance and there are elements to it. The artistes have to do merchandise, do a sound check here at the venue, as well as a 10-question interview that they can put on their social media platforms. It really is a contribution to them,” Samuels told the Jamaica Observer.
Samuels continued: “Sound Check is my way of saying we need showcases. It’s real fans that come. I also believe in freedom of speech and these artistes can say anything that they want. I want all of them to be themselves.”
The series is scheduled for the third Thursday of each month.
Next month’s performer is Armanii, who currently has a chart-topper with
Haad (Fiesta).
“I have Armanii, Shaneil Muir, we’re talking to Bayka, we just want everyone to come here and feel welcomed. We are booked until the end of the year,” said Samuels.
